ATEX & DSEAR: Dangerous Subsatnces and Explosives Atmospheres Regulations 2002
The ATEX directives and the UK implementation DSEAR are intended to improve protection against fires and explosions in the workplace.
The following duties are placed on the employer:
- Assess fire & explosion risks of any work activities involving “dangerous substances”
- Take measures to eliminate or reduce these risks “as far as reasonably practicable”
- Take all reasonable practicable measures to mitigate the effects of a fire or explosion
- Provide equipment and procedures to deal with accidents and emergencies
- Have a written Basis of Safety in the form of an “Explosion Protection Document”
- Provide employees with information and precautionary training
This specifically includes Hazardous Area Classification and detailed inspection of electrical and mechanical equipment for use in hazardous areas.
Haztech can provide a full ATEX and DSEAR compliance service from assessment of fire and explosion risks, Area Classification, specification of risk reduction measures, detailed examination of equipment, development of Basis of Safety for operation and provision of training for all levels of personnel.
Significant savings can be made by correct specification and sizing of hazardous zones thus reducing the requirement for expensive Hazardous Area certified equipment and ongoing inspection and maintenance costs.
