Many of our consultants were instrumental in the development Hazard Analysis (HazAn) and Hazard and Operability (HazOp) study techniques within ICI in the UK in the 1970s & 1980s.
These techniques have been refined and applied to a wide range of industries for our clients, from highly complex oil refinery scale projects to novel technology projects such as "The Eden Project".
Haztech's Hazard Study Service
Implementation
Haztech undertakes Hazard Studies and HazOp with our clients, by providiing a Chair and a Study Secretary to work with the project team to undertake Hazard and Operability (HazOp) Studies as required.
Chair - leads the exercise, ensuring that the study is conducted to our required high standard.
Secretary - captures and records the material in an agreed and structured manner that enables the outcomes to be taken forward and the audit to be established.
Six stage HAZARD Study Methodology
Pioneered by ICI and adopted by industry and the IChemE this approach identifies the various stages that characterises a project development in terms of hazard and safety assessment requirements.
Study 1 - Identifies fundamental hazardous properties and checks for availability of key hazard data.
Study 2 - Hazard identification and hazard analysis using flow sheets and block diagrams.
Study 3 - Full HazOp on frozen P&I diagrams.
Study 4 - Check that all intended actions have been implemented, including hardware and software.
Study 5 - Pre-commissioning checks including statutory requirements.
Study 6 - Safety audit, after a few months operation.
Integration to SIL and LOPA studies
The hazard studies and HazOp identify the potential hazardous events and the design, control, prevention and protection systems that prevent the hazardous event occurring. The output of the hazard studies is designed to be integrated into the SIL (Safety Integrity Level) and LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis) assessments for the project.
Tracking of Actions
Development of an action database following the hazard studies ensures that actions are identified, recorded and implemented by the project team.
PHA-Pro Software
Haztech uses in house software for hazard studies and also 'PHA-Pro' the very latest in process hazard analysis software which incorporates:
- 'What if'
- HazOp
- Checklist
- PrHA
- FMEA
- SIL & LOPA
Training
Haztech Consultants provide hazard study training for clients including:
- Hazard study appreciation
- Hazard study leaders course
- Mentoring
